More than two millennia before the travels of Marco Polo, Armenia had established itself as the world’s first rug-making culture. But after more than 70 years of Soviet rule, the rug-making tradition had nearly died out. James Tufenkian returned to the newly independent Republic of Armenia in 1993 to help revive its rug-weaving traditions. 

James brought traditional hand craftsmanship back into every stage of rug production by building on the remarkable wool of the hardy Armenian Balbas sheep. These rugs are entirely faithful to Tufenkian's production values. They’re imbued with a particular Armenian flavor and ancient weaving traditions.
